Glass Block

Glass Block is made up of silica sand, soda ash and limestone.  The raw materials are mixed with additives and heated in large tanks up to 2300ºF.
The result is a molten glass which is then poured into a half –block mould. Two halves are sealed together creating a partial vacuum of about 70% preventing condensation within the unit. It is then fed into an oven to slowly cool, and in the process, strengthen. This is called annealing process. The last process is coating of each block with poly vinyl butyric.

Glass block can be hollow or solid. It comes in variety of sizes, shapes, patterns & textures. The present commercial method of manufacturing allows glass blocks with a maximum surface of 30cm x 30cm to be produced. They are used to produce straight and curved interior and exterior walls. Square units are available in   6-, 8-, or 12-inch sizes. Rectangular units are available in 4x8-inch and 6x8-inch sizes.

Why should I use glass block?
•    It requires a little maintenance or special care. If there is breakage in glass block wall or window only a single glass block need to be replaced.
•    It is extremely durable because of the thickness of the faces and mortar bonding of blocks.
•    It provides solutions for two important fundamental construction needs: energy saving and security.
•    It provides significant levels of thermal and acoustic insulation, impact resistance and resistance to fire.
•    It has resistance toward mechanical strain and thermal shock.

 Glass blocks are available in  various trims, colors, textures, designs and patterns .It is a unique building material. Used creatively this building material can produce dramatic aesthetic effects. They can be used in railway station, seismic zones or in any project requiring specific technical characteristics. Some interior uses can be contemporary shower stall, a kitchen island or backslash, or as the sidelights at the front door.
