Glass Elements In Theatre Architecture - Esplanades Theatre, Singapore

Esplanades theatre is a stunning waterside building alongside Marina Bay in Singapore.

The building is known as “durians” or tropical fruit by the locals as it appears to be like one which is native to this region of the world. Surrounded by the high-rise buildings of Singapore, the Esplanade Theatre as a structure is also designed to be viewed from above. This architectural icon with its distinctive twin shells is the centre of performing arts in Singapore.

The building was designed by two architectural firms namely DP Architects (DPA) of Singapore and the London-based Michael Wilford & Partners (MWP). It was opened tothe public in the year 2002.

The structure of the building is circular, forming a concert hall and a theatre for performing arts.

The design consists of two rounded space frames which are fitted with about 7000 triangulated glass and sunshades. These provide shading for the incoming sun rays and control the internal environment of the pavilions. The design of the Esplanade is believed to be reflecting the balance in Nature.

The laminated glass roofs have been designed to provide not just wonderful views of the outside but also to help keep out the sultry climate. Natural light filters through the glass facades and enlivens the interiors.

Esplanades Theatre is a venue for concerts, recitals and other performances. The rounded architectural forms comprise a 1,600-seat concert hall and a 2,000-seat theatre for performing arts.
