Glass Green House In Changgyeonggung Botanical Garden, Korea

One of the major attractions of the Changgyeonggung Botanical Garden, Korea is the glass green house. It is one of the largest and most impressive glass houses in the world housing some rare species of plants.

The glasshouse of the Changgyeonggung Botanical Garden was built in 1907. The building was designed by Japanese architect Hayato Fukuba, and constructed by a French company. Concurrent with the times, the building clearly shows the Victorian style in its design.

The sharply pointed arch and window frames were made with long, thin wood frames with glass panels inserted within. The ridge of the roof is designed with typical royal motifs. In front of the green house is present a picturesque fountain and a beautiful garden.

The glass green house was part of the botanical gardens and zoo which was built within the palace premises. While the zoo became redundant and was finally moved from the premises, the green house survived and continued to attract attention probably for its building design and the fact that it was one of its kinds at that time. It was renewed and restored in the early eighties and came to be recognised as the first modern western style glasshouse in Korea.

The restored glasshouse now holds over 110 kinds of flora, classified into wild flowers, endangered plants and native plants, and proving to be an excellent place for students of botany.
