INSPIRATIONAL SERIES : Coloured Glass Architecture

A Coloured Glass Architecture welcomes you - Netherlands Institute of Sound and Vision

An obvious visual treat, this coloured glass building shimmers all around with plethora of colors. This building is truly a wonder in coloured glass with the use of different types of glass creatively.

Housing all the audio and visual materials of Dutch, this coloured glass building has three volumes such as archives & stores, television museum and staff offices. The archives are located underground whereas the media museum and offices are located above the ground.

The huge coloured glass atrium broadly welcomes the people with its ecstatic beauty where the coloured relief glasses adorn the façades of the building portraying the images of Dutch television.

Glass for Building Exteriors

The translucent exterior façade comprises more than 2100 of façade glass panels to maintain the aesthetic beauty of this building. The rigidity of these stained glass panels is achieved by the stained-glass technique that uses the application of ceramic paste to the glass panels. These glass panels are embellished with 748- color relief images to enhance the beauty further.

The glazed glass faced skin embellishes the two ends of the huge atrium that brings the colored lights into the interiors of the building in no time. Thus optimal thermal insulation is achieved by these glazed skin structures.

Offices are located on the south sides of the building that avails the usage of glazed post-and-rail facades. To enjoy the beauty of uninterrupted colors glittering dynamically, the colored glazing is replaced in every third bay with clear glasses.

Energy Efficienct architecture

Measuring 54X54 square meters, this tinted glass building is 26 meters high and comprises 8 floors totally. The energy efficiency of this edifice is very high as the concrete heating/cooling of the floors and the absence of suspended ceilings help to acclimatize with the outside temperature and humid conditions. These are UV resistant that triggers the necessity of environmental friendliness in all aspects.

The double skin glass façade acts as a passive climate façade that lowers the usage of artificial energy resources. These glass facades maintain the optimal warmth inside the interiors by allowing appropriate daylight to pass through. Thus the need for artificial lighting is greatly reduced and these are easy to maintain too.

This colored building is certainly one of the best architectural wonders in the world!
