World's Greenest Railway Stations: Atocha Railway Station, Madrid

04 Jul 2012

Where the Green is inside

The trees and plants inside the station reduce the stress involved in catching a train on time. It makes one feel peaceful and comfortable. The Atocha Railway Station in Madrid, Spain, has a unique interior plan. It is the largest railway station in Madrid and is the main station serving commuter trains. It is the center point for the intercity trains from Spain and also the main station for high-speed AVE trains. But look inside this busy, ‘high-tech’ station and you will find 4,000 square meters of a beautiful tropical garden!

Rafael Moneo is the person behind the design of the new Atocha train station terminal.

Madrid’s Atocha station is more similar to a modern airport than the traditional idea of a railway station. Two of the Madrid Metro stations are a part of the main railway station and so commuters find it more comfortable. Major attractions of Madrid are situated near the station as it is centrally located. Signed references such as “Train departures” and “Boarding Lounges” can be seen in the station. The current extension work will divide the station into two different terminals – one for arrival and one for departure. The Atocha station is spacious and always gives a bright and comfort feel. First time visitors are surely surprised to see a tropical garden inside a railway station. This inspirational place will make you forget that you are waiting to board a train.
